The Stimulus and Rhythms of AtalantaThe arousal which, I thought would be most thought provoking and openhearted was Atalanta. I undercoat the idea of characterising a dynamic, good vivacious cleaning woman appealing due to my strong background intheatre and acting. This enabled me to recognize hidden depths ofAtalantas character, which were not spare at first sight.Therefore, I chose this stimulus beca aim I believed that Atalantawould be an interesting and ch wholeenging character to salute withthe medium of dance. Another reason why I chose this stimulus, was theuse of the textile and costume to portray how rhythms can be created byrepeating and op deposit shapes and how certain lines indicatemotion. Due to my previous experience as a rhythmic gymnast, I wasable develop original and out-of-the-way movements, because I was used tousing cloth and ribbons as a convey for demonstrating highly complexphysical movementsAfter receiving the stimulus, I first of all researched Atalanta.Using a variety of resources such as and the Internet, I found thatAtalanta derived from Greek legend, and was a strong athleticcompetitor, whom no man could worst at running. This was emphasised inmy dance through the use of sustained running movements and the use ofpauses to emphasis the importance of the poses. This also helped toreflect the impassibility of the wooden sculpture. Analysis and furtherresearch led me to conclude that the pose and expression of thesculpture Atlanta are portraying her determination and power. This wasevident in the strong and dynamic movements of my dance, as well asthe use of facial expressions, bodily expressions and focus. My bodilyexpressions were natural, controlled with an upright posture, thushelping to portray her purpose as an athlete in a race. The facialexpressions portrayed her determination, thus demonstrating her strongand vivacious character, and the embodiment of power, which Atalantarepresents. The combination of body an d facial gestures shared in themood and theme of both the dance and the music. concenter aided my facialexpressions. It was important for the focus to be strong, not looking atat the floor at any time, but either looking out into the space suchas when doing an arabesque but also approach inwards to concentrate on amove, for example the running movements from the pictures. by the use of Stanslavkis method-acting I used my research tocharacterise a strong female woman, which was then transposed intomovements. To achieve the dimensions of Atalantas character, Iprofiled her, so that when I was dancing, I would embody thecharacter, this enabled me to access her personality quickly.
